 April 5, 2013

Well, guess you're wondering what happened between the dates of 3/24/13 to today.   Since we just decided to start writing this blog a few days ago, didn't want to bore you with too much detail.   So here are a few highlights of what we've been up to.

As you may have heard from us, Red Bay, AL is not exactly a "happening" type of town.   So we got busy on the computer to check out what was around us to go see, and boy, we've been on the go ever since.   Here are a few of our ventures;

Tupelo, MS - Elvis' birthplace, Johnnie's Drive-In (Elvis' place to eat, "dough" burgers were really good), Tupelo Hardware Store where Elvis' mother bought him his first guitar (almost got Dennis to buy one) & the Tupelo Automobile Museum (our neighbor, Don, back home would have been in heaven)

Elvis Lives!!!!!

Red Bay, AL - Redmont Country Club - Played 9 holes of golf.  Then came back "home" and showed off Dennis' new Tiffin cornhole board set to our neighbors.   Then fired up the Coleman grill for hot dogs and hash browns.   Another day checked out several thrift shops (Dennis' mom, Dolores, would have been in heaven) around the area.   Watched some of the basketball tournament in the customer lounge since CBS in the motorhome seems to have a mind of it's own.   Comes and goes.

Muscle Shoals, Florence, Tuscumbia, AL -  Wow, this was some day trip!!   First it was a stop at the worlds only Coon Dog Cemetary.   Only pure bred coon dogs can be buried there.   You'd just have to see it to believe it.   Check it out online, it's a sight to see and if you're ever in the area, don't miss it :)).   From there we headed to the Rattlesnake Saloon and Lodge.   Another sight to see, but only if you're in the area :)).   It's a restaurant/bar carved into the side of a mountain.   We hear it's gets rolling on a Saturday night!!   Also on the property, you can bring your own horses & camper, stay the weekend and ride the trails in the hills.   Dennis wants to go riding, but I'm not too sure.   Horses don't seem to like me for some reason :)).   Then it was on to lunch at Swamp John's in Tuscumbia.  Great place for catfish!!   From there it was on to The Shoals, a Robert Trent Jones golf course.   Beautiful links type course - but a little too rich for our blood.   Pictures will have to do.   Then on to Florence to see the only Frank Lloyd Wright designed house in AL.  and then on to the WC Handy birthplace/museum.

Birmingham, AL -  Drove down to spend Easter Sunday with my nephew, Bryan.    It was so good to see him and get to see where he lives and works.   He took us to the Mellow Mushroom for lunch and then to Yogurt Mountain for dessert.   We toured all over Birmingham but most things were closed because of it being Easter.   But that was ok, just being together with him was a treat.   Had a great time!!   Thanks Bryan!

Dismal's Canyon -   I know the name doesn't sound very appealing, but what a great place.   Today 4/2/13 is actually our 8th wedding anniversary and I can't think of a better way to spend it.   You walk down steps to a "canyon" which has a beautiful meandering brook, huge boulders, waterfalls, cliffs overhead and towering trees.   We wore our rubber boots since it was a little muddy on the trail, and were able to walk some in the water.   Was really a neat place virtually in the middle of nowhere.  Would recommend it if "you're in the area" which you would probably never be - unless you come to Red Bay :)).   Was about 45 miles from here in Phil Campell, AL.    Then Dennis took me out for our anniversary dinner to the big 4th Street Grille & Steakhouse in Red Bay.   What a great day!!!

Memphis, TN -  After having some service work on the motorhome in the morning, we drove a couple of hours over to Memphis to spend time with Dennis' niece, Marianne and her husband Cory.   Oh, and of course Lucy, their beautiful golden retriever.   They took us to a great place for dinner, Vinegar Jim's.  Met up with their friends, Kevin & Kim, who we thoroughly enjoyed meeting.  They also have an RV.  Was great sharing stories with them.  Thanks Marianne & Cory!!   Next morning it was off to work for them and we headed to downtown Memphis for lunch at Charlie Vergo's Rendezvous Restaurant.   Talk about great ribs!!!   We ate like little pigs!!   Toured around Beale Street for a bit and then headed back to Red Bay.

Russellville, AL - Another 9 holes of golf at Twin Pines Country Club.   About 30 miles from Red Bay.   Another fun afternoon.

Well, that's bring you up to date as to what we've been doing.   We've also had service work done several times on the motorhome (we really need to name the motorhome something ) over the last two weeks which is the whole reason we're here, as you know.   Hopefully Monday will be our last service and we can get "ON THE ROAD"!!!!!!!!!    However, we must say we've enjoyed the stay here and seeing things we'd probably never see ordinarily :)).     Later.........
